The Cyclone Gridiron Club (CGC) is an official support group recognized by the ISU Department of Athletics. The CGC mission is to contribute to the advancement of Iowa State Cyclone Football . CGC members work with the coaches and athletic administrative staff to achieve the following goals:

  • Raise money for special projects and services for the football program and staff which are not provided for in the annual Athletic Department budget
  • Sponsor and conduct activities which foster a positive football family atmosphere and spirit
  • Ensure good communication and exchange of information between the football staff and it supporters
  • To date the CGC has raised over $1,000,000 for non-budgeted football program expenses!

All contributions are tax deductible and will go directly to the ISU football program.

If you join today, you will be able see the final scrimmage of fall practice.   The Cyclone Gridiron Club will host a member-only, closed practice and tailgate at Jack Trice Stadium on August 20th.  The tailgate starts at 4 pm, Head Coach Paul Rhoads will speak to CGC members at 5:50 and the scrimmage begins at 6:00. Come see the quarterback battle in person and see the new scoreboard live for the first time!

Cyclone Head Football Coach Paul Rhoads is interviewed at Media Day

Iowa State held football media day last Thursday at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames, Iowa.  The Cyclones who were 5-7 last season hope to rebound and make it back to a bowl game in 2011.  A challenging schedule again awaits Iowa State, some experts feel that it is the toughest in the nation.

2010 Iowa State Football Season Review – Season Predictions, How did we do?

Let’s take a look at how we did on our Preseason Predictions.

2010 Preseason Prediction (8-4) (5-3)

2010 Actuals (5-7) (3-5) – Winning 8 games was the best case scenario in my mind before the season.  Was it ever likely? No, but Jon Miller picked Iowa to go undefeated so I had to do something about it.

Jake Knott was very pleasant surprise this year, grabbing 2nd team All Big honors as a true sophomore

Game-by-Game Predictions

9/2 Northern Illinois (2009 record: 7-6) – Top returning players: RB Chad Spann – The Cyclones young linebackers will be challenged by the Huskies power running game, but I-State’s offense is much improved and will be too much.

  • Prediction: Iowa State 30 Northern Illinois 20

Win (60% chance of victory) – Correct: Iowa State 27 Northern Illinois 10

9/11 at Iowa #9 (2009 record: 11-2, 2009 result: Iowa 35 Iowa State 3) – Top returning players: DE Adrian Clayborn / S Tyler Sash – Iowa is going to be a very solid team, but they are beatable. Iowa doesn’t put too many teams away early, in fact the Iowa State game was one of the few games last year that the Hawkeyes won handily. Austen Arnaud will be determined to go out with a win after playing his worst game in last year’s contest.

  • Prediction: Iowa 27 Iowa State 20

Loss (40% chance of victory) – Correct: Iowa 35 Iowa State 7

9/18 Kansas State at Arrowhead Stadium (2009 record: 6-6, 2009 result Kansas State 24 Iowa State 23) – Top returning players: RB Daniel Thomas – Very important game for Iowa State. ISU wins the close game this year.

  • Prediction: Iowa State 31 Kansas State 27

Win (55% chance of victory) – Wrong: Kansas State 27 Iowa State 20

9/25 Northern Iowa (2009 record: 7-4) – Top returning players: TE Schuyler Oordt – The Panthers will come in confident they can win this ball game after beating the Cyclones 24-13 in their last meeting. Iowa State will take care of business this time around.

  • Prediction: Iowa State 30 Northern Iowa 17

Win (65% chance of victory) – Correct: Iowa State 27 Northern Iowa 0

10/2 Texas Tech (2009 record: 9-4) – Top returning players: LB Brian Duncan – We have no idea what to expect from this Texas Tech team. Our best guess is they take a step back , but they still have a lot of Texas talent on this squad.

  • Prediction: Texas Tech 27 Iowa State 24

Loss (50% chance of victory) – Wrong: Iowa State 52 Texas Tech 38

10/9 Utah (2009 record 10-3) – Top returning players: RB Eddie Wide / DB Brandon Burton – The Utes will bring a punishing running game to Jack Trice Stadium. The Cyclones need this win badly and find a way to get it done.

  • Prediction: Iowa State 30 Utah 27 (OT)

Win (50% chance of victory) – Wrong: Utah 68 Iowa State 27

10/16 at Oklahoma #7 (2009 record: 8-5) – Top returning players: RB DeMarco Murray / WR Ryan Broyles / LB Travis Lewis – Oklahoma had a down season last year and will take it out on opponents this year. OU has a too much talent, but expect our boys to battle hard.

  • Prediction: Oklahoma 27 Iowa State 10

Loss (30% chance of victory) – Correct: Oklahoma 52 Iowa State 0

10/23 at Texas #5 (2009 record: 13-1) – Top returning players: LB Keenan Robinson / DB Aaron Williams / DB Curtis Brown / DB Blake Gideon – Texas will be stout on defense. The Longhorn offense will be a work-in-progress, but you know the talent is there. The Cyclones are 0-7 lifetime against Texas. It would be great to get that first win this year.

  • Prediction: Texas 34 Iowa State 17

Loss (30% chance of victory) – Wrong: Iowa State 28 Texas 21

10/30 Kansas (2009 record: 5-7, 2009 result: Kansas 41 Iowa State 36) – Top returning players: LB Drew Dudley – We like Turner Gill and think he will be a good coach, but why is there so much love for the Jayhawks this year. The team lost all of their top talent last year, are breaking in a new system and are coming off a 1-7 record in the Big 12. We think they stay at the bottom of the Big 12 again this season.

  • Prediction: Iowa State 38 Kansas 14

Win (65% chance of victory) – Correct: Iowa State 28 Kansas 16

11/6 Nebraska #8 (2009 record: 10-4, 2009 result: Iowa State 9 Nebraska 7) – Top returning players: DL Jared Crick /DB Prince Amukamara – Iowa State will be out to prove that last year’s victory in Lincoln was no joke. The Cyclones will trade blows with the Huskers and send them off to the Big 10 with a two game losing streak against Iowa State.

  • Prediction: Iowa State 23 Nebraska 20 (OT)

Win (50% chance of victory) – Wrong: Nebraska 31 Iowa State 30 OT

11/13 at Colorado (2009 record: 3-9, 2009 result: Iowa State 17 Colorado 10) – Top returning players: OL Nate Solder / OL Ryan Miller – We should know Dan Hawkins fate by the time of this game. If Colorado is having a good season, it will be a close game. We think the Buffaloes season will be spiraling by this point and Iowa State will take advantage.

  • Prediction: Iowa State 27 Colorado 17

Win (55% chance of victory) – Wrong: Colorado 34 Iowa State 14

11/20 Missouri (2009 record: 8-5, 2009 result: Missouri 34 Iowa State 24) – Top returning players: DE Aldon Smith – The Tigers have relied heavily on their offense to win games. MU is on the verge of losing their top running back and are inexperienced at wide receiver. Blaine Gabbert and company will put up points, but the Cyclones will score more.

  • Prediction: Iowa State 34 Missouri 28

Win (50% chance of victory) – Wrong: Missouri 14 Iowa State 0

OUR PASSING PREDICTION
Austen Arnaud –  254-406; 3,112 yards; 19 TD; 12 INT; 63%
Jerome Tiller – 42-70; 472 yards; 2 TD; 2 INT; 60%

The Verdict-  The passing offense wasn’t nearly as effective as we thought it would be in year 2 of Tom Herman’s offense.   The blame can be spread around to the quarterbacks, receivers and the offensive line.

The Verdict –  We weren’t too far off on ARob’s yardage total considering we thought he would have a bowl game to add to his total.  Arnaud’s running yards were a disappointment, but much of that can be pinned on the offensive line.  The offensive line allowed 33 sacks in 2010 after giving up only 16 in 2009.

The Verdict –  We kept expecting Sedrick Johnson to break out and it never happened.   Best of luck to Sedrick at Stephen F. Austin.  Darius Darks hasn’t been bad, but he hasn’t lived up to the promise he showed as a freshman when Robert McFarland was running the offense.  We thought Collin Franklin would have a big year and he he did not disappoint.  Jake Williams was also stand out leading the team with 4 touchdown receptions.

2010 Iowa State Football Season Review – Which Goals Were Achieved?

Before the season started we assembled a list of 10 attainable goals for Cyclone football in 2010.   We thought it would be fun to take a look back and see how many of the goals were achieved.  The Cyclones ended up achieving 4 of the 10 goals.

1.  Protect Jack Trice Stadium – Iowa State literally had to protect their home turf during camp when flood waters threatened the Jacobsen Building.  Players and coaches had to lay down sandbags to keep the flood waters out.  Now they must do it on the football field.  ISU will play seven games at home and they must win at least four, preferably five, if they want to reach the post season.  The home schedule consists of  Northern Illinois, Northern Iowa, Texas Tech, Utah, Kansas, Nebraska and Missouri.

GOAL ACHIEVED – The Cyclones notched victories against Northern Illinois (27-10), Northern Iowa (27-0), Texas Tech (52-38) and Kansas (28-16).  The home loss that really hurt was the 31-30 loss to Nebraska in overtime.  Utah throttled ISU 68-27 and Missouri blanked the Cyclones in the finale 14-0.

2. Win the neutral field game – The Cyclones will travel to Kansas City in week three to take on Kansas State for Farmageddon II.  The game was decided by a Kansas State blocked extra point last year with just seconds remaining.  The Cyclones need to win the game this year to feel good about bowl opportunities.

FAILED – The Arrowhead experiment didn’t turn out well for Iowa State.  The Cyclones dropped two close games to the Wildcats in Kansas City.  I really believe ISU wins one of these games if it was played at home.

3. Win a road game – Sounds easy enough right?  Until you look at the schedule.  The Cyclones only have four road games and three of the games are against top ten opponents (#9 Iowa, #7 Oklahoma and #4 Texas).  I-State’s best chance for victory comes on November 13th when they travel to Colorado to take on the Buffaloes.

GOAL ACHIEVED – Iowa State shocked the country when they went to Austin and dropped the #19 Texas Longhorns 28-21.  Texas went into a tailspin after the loss, but it was the first win ever for ISU over Texas and probably the Cyclones most impressive win of the year.

4. Go .500 or better in conference games – Iowa State went 3-5 in the Big 12 last year.  Getting to .500 in the conference would be a giant step in the right direction.  Winning four of these six games is the most likely scenario (Kansas State in KC, Texas Tech, Kansas, Nebraska, @Colorado, Missouri)

FAILED – Iowa State went 3-5 for the second year in a row.  The Cyclones were close to achieving their goal with narrow losses to Nebraska and Kansas State.

5. Beat a ranked opponent – The Cyclones should have several opportunities as six of their opponents currently sit in or just outside of the Top 25.  The teams include Iowa, Utah, Oklahoma, Texas, Nebraska and Missouri.

GOAL ACHIEVED – Iowa State beat Texas when they were ranked #19 in the country. Northern Illinois finished just outside of the Top 25.

6. Sweep the non conference games – Another tough task.  The Cyclones start the season with Northern Illinois, a team expected to contend for the MAC title.  A trip to Iowa City is up next to take on a Hawkeye team that some “experts” have in the national title game.  Next up is FCS power Northern Iowa who beat the Cyclones in their last matchup and gave Iowa fits last year.  The non conference schedule concludes with Utah, a team that has been a bowl champion in each of the last seven years.   Win all four of these games and it will be a good year to be a Cyclone.

FAILED – The Cyclones were 2-2 with wins over Northern Illinois and Northern Iowa.  Iowa State was blown out by Iowa and Utah in the other two games.

7. Win 6 games and become bowl eligible – If Iowa State can accomplish the first three goals above then this goal is accomplished as well.   The main goal for all teams, every year is to make it to a bowl game.  It is a great reward for the hard work the players and coaches put in and it helps build the future of the program with the extra bowl practices.

FAILED – This is the one that hurts the most.  Again the Kansas State and Nebraska losses really stick out and ISU couldn’t get it done in the final game against Mizzou.

8. Win the bowl game – Getting to a bowl game is great, but winning the game gives a team momentum heading into the off season.  Paul Rhoads is very clear that the goal every year for Iowa State is to WIN a bowl game.

FAILED – Can’t win a game you never made it to.

9. Win the Big 12 North – On the surface it would seem to be a tough year to accomplish this goal with trips to Norman and Austin, but the other conference games are all winnable.  The only other conference road game is at Colorado, then there is the neutral field game against Kansas State and the rest of the games are at home (Texas Tech, Kansas, Nebraska and Missouri).  If the Cyclones can go 5-3, with one of the wins coming against Nebraska, a Big 12 North title is a possibility.

FAILED –  It seems far fetched looking at this goal now, but with 3 games remaining Iowa State controlled it’s own destiny in the North.  Complete the 2 point conversion against Nebraska and who knows what would have happened.

10. Beat Texas or Oklahoma – Trivia Question 1:  When was the last time Iowa State beat Oklahoma at football?  Answer: 1990.  It has been twenty years since the Cyclones beat the Sooners.  Jim Walden’s team topped the Sooners 33-31 in Norman.  Iowa State’s all time record against Oklahoma (5-67-2).  Ouch.  Trivia Question 2:  When was the last time Iowa State beat Texas at football?  Answer: Never.  The Cyclones are (0-7) against the Longhorns.   Want people to respect Iowa State football?  The Cyclones will get respect nationally if they beat a ranked Texas or Oklahoma team at their house.

GOAL ACHIEVED – I honestly thought achieving this goal was a long shot before the season, but the Cyclones checked this one off the list.  Iowa State has now beat every team in the Big 12…..and it feels good to say that.

2010-11 Basketball – Kansas 84 Iowa State 79 (Includes Photo Gallery)

Johnny Orr got the Hilton Crowd fired up before the game

Iowa State fell to #3 Kansas 84-79 on Wednesday night.  The Cyclones gave the Jayhawks all they could handle, but Marcus Morris career high 33 points was too much for ISU.  Diante Garrett had 27 points to lead the Cyclones.  Iowa State falls to 13-4 and is now 0-2 in conference play.

Final Score: Kansas 84 Iowa State 79
