Cyclones Snap 17 Game Road Losing Streak
Austen Arnaud and Alexander Robinson lead the Iowa State Cyclones to a 34-17 victory over Kent State last Saturday, snapping a 17 game road losing streak that marked Iowa State’s first road win since October 29, 2005. It was the first road win for the Cyclones since they beat Texas A&M 42-14 four years ago. While they did win by a comfortable 17 points, the Cyclones looked a bit sloppy and definitely have some problems to fix in the turnover and penalty departments before next week.
Team and Player Performances
Iowa State improved their record to 2-1 by coming out strong in the first half and posting a 27-7 lead. The Cyclones recovered three turnovers that resulted two touchdowns on their way to a 20 point halftime lead. The Cyclones’ offense moved the ball well on their way to putting up 404 total yards of offense, with 234 yards rushing and 170 yards passing. The Defense also played very strong and gave up only 43 yards rushing and 302 totals yards to the Golden Flashes. David Sims and the Cyclones D held the Kent State offense to a terrible 1 for 12 on third down conversions and forced 5 turnovers.
Arnaud and Robinson combined for 330 out of 405 total yards of offense and 28 points in the Cyclones’ 34 to 17 win. Arnaud rebounded from a week ago to have a great game, both through the air and on the ground. Arnaud, coming off a 4 interception benching against Iowa, was 13 for 21 for 144 yards through the air for a touchdown and no interceptions. He looked like he was in much better control of his passes and game management than he did against the Hawkeyes.
The Cyclones rushing attack racked up 234 yards on the ground against Kent State’s run defense. Junior RB Alexander Robinson had 23 carries for 143 yards and scored on a 15 yard scramble for a touchdown in the third quarter. This 143 yard performance marked the 5th 100 yard rushing game of his career. Austen Arnaud also had a great performance on the ground as he rushed 9 times for 42 yards and scored 2 touchdowns on the ground in the first half.
