Kent State’s strengths:
- QB Julian Edelman – dual threat quarterback, more dangerous as a rusher than a passer, averaged 230 yards/game in total offense in 2006
- Offensive Line – the Golden Flashes return four of five starters on the OL
- Linebackers – The starting linebacker unit (all juniors) return
Kent State’s weaknesses:
- Special teams – had one of the worst kicking and punting units in the nation in 2006
- Wide Receivers – young group of wideouts
- Defensive Line – lack depth and experience
- Secondary – Lost two stud defensive backs to graduation
Notes: Talented sophomore tailback Eugene Jarvis (800+ yards as a freshman) is not expected to play against Iowa State.
Keys to victory for Iowa State:
- Contain Julian Edelman – with Jarvis out of the game, Edelman is the lone playmaker for the Golden Flashes, ISU will shut down the running game and force Edelman to throw
- Winning the special teams battle – the Cyclones should have a huge advantage in this area returning P Mike Brandtner, K Bret Culbertson, DS Matt Purvis and KOS Josh Griebahn; has Kent State improved in an area that cost them dearly in 2006
- Exploit Kent State’s weaknesses on defense – I dare Jack Williams to cover Blythe 1-on-1, wear down the defensive line by pounding them with three running backs
