Game Analysis
The Iowa State Cyclones came into the game confident and had a promising start after kicker Grant Mahoney blasted a 46 yard field goal through the uprights with just 2 and a half minutes left in the first quarter giving the Cyclones an early 3-0 lead. It took no time at all for Rick Stanzi and the Hawkeyes to respond, as they marched down the field after a failed on side kick attempt from the Cyclones. The Hawkeyes responded less than a minute later when Rick Stanzi connected with Brett Morse on a 1 yard pass to give the Hawkeyes a 7-3 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter was relatively even until the last five minutes before half time. Cyclones’ Arnaud threw an interception to Iowa’s Tyler Sash who returned the pick 31 yards to the ISU 24. Just moments later, Stanzi hit Derrell Johnson-Koulianos for an 18 yard touchdown to stretch the lead to 14-3 before half time. The Cyclones committed 7 penalties for 60 yards and threw three interceptions in the first half.
Another turnover by the Cylcones led to another Hawkeyes score after Alexander Robinson fumbled a hand off and gave the Hawkeyes the ball in scoring territory. Shortly there after, Stanzi hooked up with Allen Reisner on a 7 yard pass for a touchdown, pushing the lead to 21-3 in favor fo the Hawks. Only 4 minutes later, Brett Greenwood picked off Arnaud for the fourth time, setting up a 1 yard touchdown run by Wegher with 4:27 left to play in the third quarter. The Hawks lead was now 28-3.
The fourth quarter saw many of the same mistakes and miscues by the Iowa State offense, as they were completely unsuccessful at moving the chains. Iowa tacked on another touchdown late in the fourth quarter following a 10 yard touchdown pass from Stanzi to Keenan Davis, pushing the lead to 35-3 where it would remain the rest of the game.
