Iowa State Cyclone Observations

Nick Frere sacks Jake Christensen

Some amazing firsts…..

Nick Frere recorded his first sack when he tackled Jake Christensen in the first quarter

Gene Chizik records his first win as a head coach in a dramatic win over the Hawkeyes

Phillip Bates first career reception is a 38 yarder that sets up the winning field goal

Bret Culbertson hits his first game winning field goal and carries the Cy-Hawk trophy off the field

Allen Bell gets better every week

Players who deserve some extra recognition…

Allen Bell – shut down corner, the Hawkeyes threw away from him all game long, he had 7 tackles in the game

Phillip Bates – clutch, the Cyclones didn’t throw a ball Phillip’s way all game, but he kept his head in the game and made the biggest play of the day

Chris Brown – gamer, with Caleb Berg and Steve Johnson down with injury Chris Brown stepped up big time, 4 tackles and a key pass break up

Doug Dedrick – the eraser, Kenny Iwebema was a non-factor in the game, no sacks allowed by the Iowa State line

Alvin Bowen forces fumble but ISU does not recover

Things that still need to get better…

1. Finishing off drives with touchdowns – Iowa State could have had the game put away at halftime, but settled for four field goals and allowed Iowa to stick around.

2. Converting turnovers – Iowa State is forcing fumbles, but not recovering them.  Getting hands on balls, but not intercepting them.  The Cyclones must start winning the turnover battle if they are going to win Big 12 games.

3. Line play – ISU has made huge strides on both the offensive and defensive lines, but they still need to get better each and every week.
