Robinson, Arnaud Duo Lead Cyclones to 31- 10 Victory
Alexander Robinson and Austen Arnaud led the way for the Iowa State Cyclones as they pummeled Army 31- 10 Saturday at Jack Trice Stadium. The victory improved the Cyclones to 3-1 on the season, a surprising start that a lot of people were not expecting out of the Cyclones this year. Alexander Robinson has emerged as an every down back that presents a true big play threat to opposing defenses, something the Cyclones have been without since Cyclone All American Troy Davis.
Key Players
Once again, this week was showcased by QB Austen Arnaud and RB Alexander Robinson carrying the offensive load. The two juniors combined for 190 yards rushing and accounted for almost all of the scoring and total yards gained on offense. They had 28 of our 31 points and all but roughly 30 yards of total offense! They have been incredible together in Tom Herman’s offense and look very comfortable moving the ball in the spread offense.
- Alexander Robinson– The junior RB had a huge day as he broke the 100 yard barrier for the 3rd straight week. Robinson put up 127 yards rushing on 21 carries and had a rushing TD. His rushing TD came in the second quarter when he broke for a 68 yard touchdown score, the longest of his carrier. He also added 51 yards receiving and 2 touchdowns. Alexander had 3 total touchdown runs of 2, 32, and 68 yards respectively. This all came against an Army defensive line that was ranked 7 th in the nation against the rush. Hats off to ya Alexander, heck of a performance.
-
Austen Arnaud– Austen had another solid game as he moved the ball well and avoided turning the ball over. He was 11/20 for 175 yard through the air and 2 touchdowns. Arnaud also added 62 yards rushing and scored from 14 yards out on a scramble. He had three total touchdowns and is proving that he can handle Tom Herman’s spread offense. He has shown that he is a dual threat as he has torched opposing defenses for 4 rushing touchdowns and an average of 60 yards rushing.
- Grant Mahoney– The sophomore kicker has been stellar all year long. He had a good day kicking as he booted through a 50 yard field goal and missed on a 41 yard attempt. He was a perfect 4-4 on PATs and has yet to miss a single PAT this year. He has hit an astounding 92% percent of his field goals (23/25), and has only missed field goals from over 50 yards, and 41 yards.
- Cyclones Defense– Defensive coordinator Wally Burnham did a great job of confusing the Army Black Knights offense by playing 5 defensive backs at once to gain speed on the edge and shut down the Black Knight triple option. While they still put up 186 yards rushing on our defense, they were held in check compared to what they usually put up in the rushing department. The Cyclone defense held Army QBs to just 130 yards through the air, an interception and only 1 touchdown total in the game. Defensive end Christopher Lyle had a big day with 7 total tackles, two of them for losses and added a sack. Senior linebacker Jesse Smith led the Cyclone defense with 13 total tackles.
