Iowa State has a very rich college football history, dating back to the 1890’s when Coach Pop Warner helped bring collegiate football to Iowa State. College football first made its way to Iowa State in 1878 as a recreational sport but in 1894, President William Beardshear founded the Iowa State athletic association and officially sanctioned Iowa State football teams. Iowa State was originally known as the Iowa Agricultural College, and athletic teams were called the “Cardinals”. It wasn’t until 1895 that the team name was changed to the Cyclones. The Iowa State Cyclones football team has an all time record of 476–556–46 and they have a 2–7 record in post season play.

The Cyclones have a bitter rivalry with the Iowa Hawkeyes that dates back to the 1970’s when the Cy-Hawk trophy was created as a reward to the winner of the rivalry game every year, and the rivalry has grown ever since the start of the Cy-Hawk Trophy. The Cyclones have had a number of very influential coaches that have helped shape the football program and have had much success both on the field and off. Coaches such as Pop Warner, Earle Bruce, Dan McCarney, and Johnny Majors helped mold the Cyclone program into what it is today, and has created a rich tradition around the Cyclone football team.
