It will be a ‘Battle for the Ages’, a ‘Clash of the Titans’, an ‘Instant Classic’, [insert your own cliche here]. Sunday’s meet has the potential to be one of the greatest dual meets in history, at least in these parts of the country. Iowa visits Ames Sunday to battle the Cyclones who proved they are the top team in the country by beating former top dog Minnesota. The hype is big with a sellout ‘half-crowd’ at Hilton Coliseum and in this series, anything can happen.
Iowa will be without returning national champion Mark Perry due to suspension, and Iowa’s loss should be Iowa State’s gain. Iowa State Freshman Jon Reader was set to wrestle Perry, but instead will face Freshman Jake Kerr. This change of events likely will translate into a six point swing favoring Iowa State in a meet where every point is critical. Four matches are difficult to predict a winner including ISU’s Nick Gallick against Dan LeClere at 141 lbs., Iowa’s Brent Metcalf vs. Mitch Mueller at 149 lbs., Iowa’s Jay Borschel and Aron Scott at 174 lbs., and the heavyweight rematch between Matt Fields of Iowa and David Zabriskie of Iowa State.
