If Iowa State is going to contend for the Big 12 North this year, new players will need to emerge as stars. I think there are several players who have the ability to rise to the challenge. Here are some impact players to watch out for in 2007.
1. CB Allen Bell – I love his size, his speed and attitude. I think he will emerge as the top cornerback on the team and should make an impact on special teams as well.
2. RT Ben Lamaak – Lamaak has made the transition from TE to RT look easy. He is easily the most athletic lineman on the team and should get better and better as the year goes on.
3. RB Alexander Robinson – I have a feeling about this guy. He is elusive, will make you miss and has deceptive speed. Could play a huge role in the passing game.
4. DE Kurtis Taylor – Taylor was primed for a breakout year in 2006, but was injured in fall camp. I bet he can’t wait for Thursday to get here.
5. C Brandon Johnson – Started out on the OL, then moved to the DL, seems to have found his home back on the OL at center. He took the job in the spring and has never looked back.
6. CB Zac Sandvig – Should be a star on special teams, especially as a punt returner. He is ISU’s best nickel back, an important position in the pass happy Big 12.
7. RB JJ Bass – He is a cut back runner who hits the hole hard and catches the ball well out of the backfield. ARob and Bass should be a great 1-2 punch.
Other Possible Impact Players: ATH Phillip Bates, TE Patrick Neal, LB Cameron Bell, DL Bailey Johnson, WR Wallace Franklin, CB Drenard Williams, LB Jesse Smith, FS James Smith
